The rise of robotics is reshaping industries worldwide, from healthcare to transportation. At the 2025 SOAR STEM & Trade Careers Symposium, hosted by NDIA, Chang Robotics President Kate McAfoose delivered a keynote address to local high schoolers that explored the evolving role of automation and autonomy in robotics. Her talk provided a compelling look at how robotics is not just a tool for efficiency but a transformative force in the workforce.
While automation allows robots to perform programmed tasks, autonomy takes it a step further—enabling robots to navigate, make decisions, and adapt in real time. Kate emphasized that autonomy does not replace human labor but enhances it by handling repetitive or strenuous tasks, freeing up professionals to focus on higher-value work.
Expanding Robotics Beyond Manufacturing
Traditionally, robotics has been associated with manufacturing, but its applications now extend to multiple industries. Kate highlighted groundbreaking advancements such as autonomous mobile robots in healthcare that assist with supply deliveries, reducing nurse burnout. Handheld X-ray devices and autonomous snow removal vehicles are also redefining efficiency across medical and transportation sectors.
One of the key takeaways from her speech was how robotics is not just about replacing manual work but optimizing workflows. Hospitals, for example, can implement robotics to streamline operations, saving time for medical staff and improving patient care.
Embracing Innovation in a Fast-Paced World
Technology evolves at a rapid pace, and staying ahead requires continuous learning. Kate encouraged the audience to remain engaged with technological advancements, challenging them to shift focus from passive consumption to active adaptation. In a world filled with distractions, she humorously suggested, "Maybe it's time to put TikTok away and start thinking."
Her keynote delivered both insights and inspiration, demonstrating that the future of robotics is not just about machines but about empowering people to work smarter.
