Chang Robotics, in collaboration with Northwestern University’s INVO Lab, has announced the launch of GOEco, a green technology aimed at eliminating "forever chemicals" from food packaging. This innovative approach utilizes compostable graphene oxide, a nanomaterial, to create barriers in paper products like plates, straws, cups, and utensils. The goal is to replace plastic packaging, which contains harmful microplastics and PFAs (poly-fluoroalkyl substances), with a safer, eco-friendly alternative.
The development of GOEco is a significant scientific breakthrough with potential benefits for public health and environmental safety. The new technology not only avoids the harmful effects of microplastics but also surpasses plastic in preserving food freshness by preventing the transfer of moisture, oils, and gases. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. SonBinh Ngyuen of Northwestern University and Dr. Tim Wei, a former Big 10 engineering dean, highlights the innovative potential of graphene oxide in sustainable packaging.
Moving forward, Chang Robotics is conducting further safety and sustainability testing while seeking FDA approval for this technology. The company is open to commercial partnerships to advance the implementation of GOEco in the food packaging industry. Chang Robotics, known for its leadership in advanced manufacturing and robotics, continues to push the boundaries of supply chain automation and technology innovation.
